Maynard was born in Liverpool and brought up in Nantwich, Cheshire. At the age of eight he showed a natural gift for dancing and, encouraged by his family, went to dance classes three times a week. As a result he became interested in performance in general and studied drama at the Guildford School of Acting, Guildford, where it became apparent to him that his main interest was in acting. On graduation in June 1991 he became a jobbing actor, his first big break being in 1998 in 'Roger, Roger', a comedy-drama series set in a taxi office. From this he graduated to a leading role in Sky One's football soap 'Dream Team' and has since appeared in a recurring role in 'Holby City' and the children's comedy series 'Young Dracula' as a descendant of Van Helsing, and, on the West End stage in 'Chicago.'
