Originally an actor (studying in London, Poland and Paris), Jamie Payne cut his producing/directorial teeth with a number of productions with Epiphany Productions, garnering him a number of award nominations including for Best Short Film for The Dance of Shiva in 1998. A television career then followed with work on At Home with the Braithwaites, The Bill, New Tricks, Distant Shores and the TV film Suspicion.

Preceeding his Doctor Who debut in 2012, other sci-fi/fantasy credentials have included Primeval, Survivors, Ashes to Ashes, Outcasts, and Da Vinci's Demons. Other drama credits include Call the Midwife, Eternal Law, The Bletchley CircleThe Hour and The Hour II, and The White Queen.
