Born in Glenrothes, Fife, Stephen Dougray Scott went to the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff, where he was awarded the Most Promising Drama Student award in 1987. His early career saw him take on roles in series like Stay Lucky, Soldier Soldier and the film Deep Impact, with breakthrough roles in Ever After and Enigma.

The actor was a close runner for two major film franchises, first up asWolverine in X-Men, but more publicly as almost becoming James Bond (he was just beaten by Daniel Craig).

More recently he played Matt Busby in the film United (which also featured David Tennant as Jimmy Murphy), and lead character Bill Mason in the BBC remake of The Day of the Triffids
