Rachel Talalay was born in Chicago, but her family moved to Baltimore when she was six. She gained a degree in mathematics at Yale University before becoming involved with films, her first undertaking being as a production assistant on Polyester, a film by John Waters who she knew as a child. Not long afterwards she began her long association and evolving career with the A Nightmare on Elm Street series of films, as assistant production manager on the first, production manager on the second, line producer on the third, producer on the fourth, and writer/director for Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare.

Other directorial credits include, Ally McBeal, Unfabulous, Terminal City, Whistler, The Wind in the Willows, and Bomb Girls. Sci-fi/fantasy credentials include the remake of Randall & Hopkirk Deceased, Supernatural, Stephen King's Dead Zone, Haven, Continuum, and XIII.

She is married to producer Rupert Harvey.
