With the TARDIS stranded due to a chronic shortage vital mineral Zyton-7, the Doctor is able to make an emergency landing on the planet Varos which is rich in the substance. There he encounters a race of people forced to work hard in the mines and whose only entertainment comes from watching mindless violence on television and voting on whether or not contestants should be killed.
The Doctor discovers that the people of Varos are being exploited by the slug-like alien Sil who represents an unscrupulous company who wish to have the Zyton-7 themselves. However, before the Doctor can do anything he must become a contestant in the Punishment Dome...
