16 Dec 2013Matt Smith retrospective to air December 25 before The Time of the Doctor

TORONTO (December 16, 2013) – Stiff upper lip, Canada, regenerations are a Time Lord’s reality. To soften the blow, on Christmas Day at 8 p.m. ET, Space gives viewers a second chance to say “goodbye, sweetie,” with the brand-new special, Doctor Who: Farewell to Matt Smith. This one-hour retrospective documentary pays tribute to the beloved Eleventh Doctor from Seasons 5, 6, and 7 of Doctor Who. Narrated by Alex Kingston (ARROW), who plays River Song, the special features highlights from the Matt Smith years, as well as interviews with the man himself, former castmate Karen Gillan (NOT ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING), Tenth Doctor David Tennant (BROADCHURCH), executive producer and head writer Steven Moffatt, and a bevy of guest stars and celebrity Whovians. To make way for the Mr. Smith lovefest, the previously announced Christmas special, THE TIME OF THE DOCTOR, moves to 9 p.m. ET, airing immediately following the farewell.

Here's an early Christmas present: Space has added a whole new Doctor Who special to its Christmas Day lineup—and done a bit of schedule juggling. Take note!

On December 25 at 8e 5p, Space will air Doctor Who: Farewell to Matt Smith, an hour-long documentary tribute to the Eleventh Doctor. That means Doctor Who fans get a whole extra hour of Matt Smith before his impending regeneration. Narrated by British actor Alex Kingston (that's River Song to you Whovians), the special will feature interviews with former companion Karen Gillan, former Doctor David Tennant, and soon-to-be-former-Doctor Matt Smith himself, as well as appearances from Doctor Who head writer/executive producer Steven Moffat and a roster of celebrity fans and guest stars.

Of course, after this warm-and-fuzzy Matt Smith send-off, it'll be time for the hard good-bye. This year's Doctor Who Christmas special, The Time of the Doctor, will now make its Canadian premiere on December 25 at 9e 6p on Space.
